By far one of the coolest experiences I’ve had at deer camp happened in Oklahoma few years ago when I hunted Oklahoma for the first time.
I was hunting in a camp filled with great hunters and industry friends from companies like Hunters Specialties, Bushnell Optics and Thompson/Center firearms. One of the first people I met was when I walked in the kitchen of Todd Rogers Rut-N-Strut camp.
by Daniel E. Schmidt
“Hi, I’m Dan, I said while extending my hand to a deer hunter who had his face painted in war paint from the day’s worth of hunting.
“Hi, I’m Craig!” he replied. I had no clue who he was in real life, other than the fact that he had hunted all day and had a close call with a buck.
Later that evening after dinner, everyone headed for the living room. Todd informed us that, “Craig is going to play some songs for us.”
I was still clueless. But I’ll admit I thought it was odd when the outside door opened and about 12 more people poured into the small house, including a local sheriff’s deputy.
Within a few minutes, this Craig dude started strumming his guitar and a videographer turned on his camera next to me and started filming.
Hmm, that’s odd, I thought.
Then this Craig fellow opened his mouth and started singing.
It took a couple of kickstarts, but I soon recognized the song. I turned to my buddy who was sitting next to me on the couch and said, “Hey, this guy’s pretty good … he sounds just like the guy who sings that song on the radio ….”
Talk about a blushing moment. I was thoroughly embarrassed. However, at the same time, I was amazed to be sharing a camp with such an unassuming nice guy.
That hunt happened about five years ago. And thanks to this video clip, I’ll be able to relive it each year.
