Fighting for His Life, Deer Hunter Appreciates Every Moment

When we complain about the little things in life that send our blood pressure soaring and we get all bent out of shape, take a deep breath to consider that things could be much worse.

Cory Sutton of Tennessee sent us a photo and story on our DDH Facebook page that is pretty compelling. Take a moment to read this and see how, after many personal battles, this diehard deer hunter is taking time to appreciate the little things in life while also getting into the woods for some deer hunting.

Cory Sutton

Here’s his story in his own words:

Just wanted to pass along my first buck with a bow and my 2nd biggest! Little back story, 2 years ago I got diagnosed with Advanced CHF and kidney failure, it’s been a massive ordeal to say the least, I’m lost count of ER visits, hospital stays and Doctor visits, I’ve had 4 heart surgeries, 2 to save my life, I now have 3 implants and a home monitor, my kidneys stay in stage 3 failure so yeah that’s no fun.

Needless to say life for my wife and children have dramatically changed but they are my rock and strength, over the last 6 months I’ve decided to take my life back and really fight this disease, I’m back in the gym (doctors not happy! But what do they know?? Lol) I’m finding my stride so to speak, I have good days and I have horrible days but at least I’m not laying down and letting this take my life sooner than later!

I have about 40 acres that before I got sick I hunted on and took some really nice deer for Tennessee standards (my biggest so far is 160 from IMB Outfitters). Anyway I haven’t hunted in almost 2 years, so I bought an all new archery setup, practiced my butt off at our local archery shop (Everything Archery-Memphis,TN) bought a Block and practiced In my backyard for weeks. I placed trail cams 1st of Aug and to my surprise a buck I saw 2 years ago was still around and has grown into a stud.

Well last Wednesday on a whim I decided to just sit in my stand and clear my head and just watch nature! It was 84 degrees I was literally in a t-shirt, shorts and Under Armour flip-flops lol and at 6:50 it happened, he showed up out of a thicket headed to my food plot. I put my 20 yard pin on him and let it fly, waited got down found my “Red Arrow” and my heart came out of my chest!

I let him lay, I found a good blood trail but didn’t want to push him (like I said this was the 1st buck I’ve ever shot with a bow) so I backed out and spent this next 10 or so hours waiting for dawn…headed out and he dropped about 60 yards from where I shot him.

I want to say no matter what disease, medical condition your facing don’t lay down and let it best you. I’m not sure if I have 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months or 5 years left on this planet! But I do know I’m thankful for every sunrise/sunset … every hug from my kids, every kiss from my wife and phone call or text from family and friends, also I’d like to say thank you for all you do for our sport, thank you for fighting for our rights to hunt.

Now that I’ve rattled on here’s trial cam pics of my deer and the final outcome, I hope you enjoy and please feel free to use any part of this message to let other hunters that they can get out and still enjoy hunting and the outdoors, please just don’t give into what your fighting.

Take Care and Happy, Safe Hunting
